FBI Director Kash Patel stated on social media that a suspect connected to the incident was taken into custody. Utah officials later clarified that the individual was being questioned as a person of interest, stressing that the investigation remains ongoing to identify the gunman.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the incident as a “political assassination.” President Donald Trump, a close ally of Kirk, shared his condolences online, calling him “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk,” and ordering American flags nationwide to be flown at half-staff until Sunday evening.
The shooting occurred approximately 20 minutes after Kirk began speaking under a tent emblazoned with the slogan “The American Comeback.” Videos circulated on social media showed chaos as attendees fled the scene, with one recording capturing the moment Kirk was struck in the neck.
University officials initially confirmed a detention shortly after the shooting, but authorities later determined that the individual was not the shooter. That person was subsequently charged with obstruction of justice.
Footage reviewed by investigators revealed a figure on the roof of the Losee Center, around 150 yards from the shooting site. Witnesses reported seeing someone run across the rooftop and lie down moments before the gunfire. Another video appeared to show the same figure leaving the area immediately after shots were fired.
Democrats and Republicans expressed outrage over the attack. California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the violence as “disgusting, vile and reprehensible.” Members of Congress echoed similar sentiments, underscoring the urgent need to confront political violence in the United States.
Kirk, who co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012, rose to prominence as a leading voice in right-wing politics. His organization became a dominant presence on college campuses, frequently organizing rallies and events that attracted large crowds. Though he did not serve in government, his influence extended into the Trump White House, where he was considered a trusted ally.
